The eightfold path through music
American saxophonist and clarinetist Jeff Lederer released a new album this fall, born during the pandemic, but full of hope, meaning and will to continue. In accordance with the Buddha's path to nirvana, consisting of 8 parts.
Today we are talking about the interesting project "Eightfold Path" (Little music 2021) by Jeff Lederer. We start with the musicians who join Lederer's saxophones. Our favorite Jamie Saft is behind the piano and the organ, maestro Steve Swallow is on bass and on the drums is Lederer's old colleague Matt Wilson.
The eight compositions on the album bear the names of the eight components of the middle path, according to Buddhist concepts. Eternal truths that are not influenced by the religion that the individual professes, but somehow summarize what is important in our very existence.
This direct connection with Buddhism should not deceive us in any way or make us think that we will listen to music more suitable for self- absorption or meditation. No, we are talking about good classical jazz in combination with improvisations in the best form. With elements of blues, with playful dialogues between instruments and great compositions.
Jamie Saft alternates his organ with the piano in a way that has been established as his trademark. All eight plays carry not only the titles, but also the messages of the eight elements of the Buddhist wheel of Dharma. It would be difficult to take anyone out of context, because they are like a single work of eight parts.
On the other hand, you can still feel this cozy, timeless sound, which until recently could be heard in the smoky little clubs late at night. And we hope it happens again. Until then, we listen to "Eightfold Path" over and over again.
