Avishai Cohen 1970
I have been postponing writing a piece about Avishai Cohen (the one that plays the bass) not because I’ve been lazy, but because the world of his music is so colourful and versatile, that I didn’t know what to start with…
But with the release of the last album, 1970, he himself showed me the way. Short and sweet, about the music of 1970 and the bass (and not just) of Avishai Cohen.
I’ll start off by saying that Gently disturbed, an album that turns 10 this year, is one of my all-time favourite albums. On that album Cohen is in the company of Mark Guiliana on drums and Shai Maestro on the piano. After that album, things kept building up and we kept tracking his projects.
Until the end of 2017, where at the Jazz at Marciac festival was the promotion for his last, very personal and lyrical project 1970. Why 1970 you might ask? Because that’s when Cohen was born. The music in the album combines the children’s songs he listened to, Sephardic music, ladino music, together with the classics left behind from those days, like Motherless Child – everything seen through Cohens’ point of view. An incredibly comfortable peek inside the world of Cohen, also the album of summer 2018. Enjoy listening!
