AYYUKA
Today we listen to the different music by the guys from the Istanbul based band AYYUKA.
The band got together in 2001, issued their fourth album Maslak Halayı (Tantana Records, 2019) last year. It is hard to describe AYYUKA’s music with a couple of words, since they combine Turkish psychedelic from the 70’s with afro beat, reggae, and funk with refinement and depth. For their almost 20 years of existence they have recorded with world renowned names like Orlando Julius from The Heliocentrics and İlhan Erşahin amongst others.
Our live meeting with AYYUKA happened years ago at Erşahin’s Istanbul club Nublu. It was a day where they played pieces from the album Somestr (Shalgam Records, 2015), and İlhan Erşahin stood in for Orlando Julius on the Saxophone during an endless improvisation, that lasted twice as long as the studio version of the song. We had the chance to meet and talk with the boys afterwards - they were still overexcited from what they do with their whole heart.
Their most recently released fourth studio album brought us back to the colourful world of the band. And it once again proved what masters of the mixing of ideas they are.
Today for a good mood we listen to the different music by Özgür Yılmaz, Ahmet Kul and Altan Sebütekin, aka AYYUKA.
