Free or about Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop’s latest album that came out on September 6th on Caroline International and Loma Vista Recordings, and the single James Bond, provoke thoughts on the Iggy Pop of today – somewhere between punk and jazz, through the album with Jamie Saft, James Bond, the album Free, to his programme on BBC Radio 6 – Iggy Confidential.
The modern world works in a way, where every person with responsibilities and a message wants to leave a trace. You cannot separate his body from his creative radiation.
Apart from his solo projects, Iggy Pop has his weekly Friday mix on BBC Radio 6. The programme is a colourful mix of modern life that you will not come across that often.
There is something for everyone in there – from punk to metal, from Miles Davis and John Coltrane, to contemporary British garage bands, to lesser known Balkan ones.
But he does not give up. There is no compromise and no taking it easy on the listener – you are with Iggy Confidential, or you are not. You are the one who made the choice.
After having followed the programme for a long time, we were not at all surprised by the single James Bond and the album Free. In all honesty. A short thirty-minute trip through today’s overfilled and overused world. A very eclectic, philosophical and slightly sad album. Special attention should be paid to the strong presence of the trumpets – played by the brilliant Leron Thomas. With the trumpet, we can notice a strong Scandinavian influence and some remote distance, so typical for northern countries. The album comes to an end with three songs with spoken words. Some strong messages by Lou Reed and Dylan Thomas about where the world is today, what lays ahead, and how to move forward.
There is another side of Iggy that we love. He became the voice in Loneliness road by Jamie Saft, Steve Swallow, and Bobby Previte.
And if you ever wonder if everything is connected – yes it is! Something for the mind.
And Iggy keeps putting together this incredible mix of punk, wave, jazz, and everything else. Freely, with connections, and with knowledge.
Very few people overcome their ego and just share their knowledge and connections with us. From their point of view. Iggy is one of them. Loves missing.
