John Zorn and the Dreamers’ Christmas

Something that always goes hand in hand with the approaching Christmas holidays is the overwhelming amount of Christmas songs being played on the radio. Here, we offer you a completely different side to holiday music - John Zorn’s Christmas, played by Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn, Kenny Wollesen, Cyro Baptista and Joey Baron, together with Mike Patton on vocals in the Christmas album “A Dreamers Christmas” (Tzadik, 2011).
The album contains seven interpretations of known Christmas songs and two numbers, written by Zorn. One incredibly eclectic Christmas mosaic, that takes us on a journey around the world – through Caribbean motives and surf to the well known Christmas songs, played in an entirely different way.
Throughout the whole time there’s a recurring mood - it’s as if you’re sitting in front of the fire place, cuddled up in a warm blanket, with a warm cup in hand, while the snow is quietly falling outside your window. That’s the first impression you get. After that, once it has become a regular occurrence in your repertoire, you could even listen to it on a hot August day, it would bring you the same warm feeling. You can listen to this incredibly fine album at any time, during any season, but on Christmas Eve, it would bring you a special kind of joy and cosiness. An album that has lasted through time, lastly while driving the snowy roads of Peloponnese, past snow covered orange trees, with the bright orange balls shining brightly through the snow.
