Rollin' by Erik Truffaz

May offers a number of new releases and interesting projects. Among them, this week we choose the latest album by our favourite French trumpeter Eric Truffaz "Rollin'" (Blue Note 2023).
When Truffaz was invited to record music for a documentary in 2020, and later to perform popular themes from French classical cinema as part of a film festival, he loved the idea. Together with the musicians he recorded with, they played live together more and more often, and so the desire to record their own versions of famous pieces from the golden years of cinema was subtly born. The album "Rollin'" is the first part of the series, and the sequel is expected to be released by the end of the year. In this first installment, Truffaz and the musicians play immortal pieces by Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone, as well as a number of other unforgettable film scores. All of this would sound boring and has been done many times before if Eric Truffaz wasn't behind the idea.
From our many live encounters with the trumpeter's music, it's safe to say that Truffaz is a rebellious and ever-changing musician who captures the flavor of the times. He takes risks, always approaches creativity with depth and respect, but also has a great sense of humor.
The truth is that every subsequent Truffaz album is beautiful, challenging and different. For many listeners, he stands as Miles Davis' greatest successor.
What impresses in the French trumpeter's work is precisely the typically jazzy groove and that old-fashioned and wholesome sound that some don't know and others are about to forget. In "Rollin'", however, that very sound pours out in full force and saturates the space with exactly the kind of full-bodied sound we're looking for. Covers and new melodies meld into a perfect palette of sounds, so precise that we don't feel the decades of difference between each piece.
Today, we're happy to share this find that's sure to make it into our summer playlist. And all we can wish for is to hear this project live soon.
