Music from Manchester

Today we take a look at the Manchester based label Gondwana Records, founded by British trumpet player Matthew Halsall.

The cosy winter evenings, especially this winter, give us the time to enjoy good music. Since some time one name keeps popping up again and again and it is English trumpet player Matthew Halsall. A musician, creating a magical world.
Matthew Halsall has a far more important role - in 2009 he founded the label Gondwana records. A company, that issues the records of GoGo Penguin (you can read more about their latest album here), Mammal Hands, Portico Quartet. It created the sound of contemporary jazz music. We look at the portfolio of the company, whose projects constantly land on the British Mercury jazz awards, which speaks about the quality of the music.

We listen to three winter etudes from the list of the company.

To kick things off, we listen to a song from Matthew Halsall’s latest album ‘Joyful Spirits of the Universe’, issued at the end of 2020. What follows is the melodic Mammal Hands, which are well known in our part of the world with the song Riddle.

For dessert we leave Portico Quartet. Somewhere in between ambience and jazz. But actually - today and now. Music, that would please lovers of trip hop and lovers of jazz alike. New, interesting and original.

Today we sail those cosy waters, offered by Gondwana records.
